Sussex Spaniel - General Information

Weight: 40-44 lbs

Height: 15-16 inches

Color(s): Gray, red-yellow, red-brown and gray-brown

Character: The Sussex Spaniel must be socialized well at puppyhood to be good around other dogs. This dog makes a good companion and is surprisingly friendly with cats and smaller pets. Can become aggressive around other unfamiliar dogs, but if properly introduced they can do well.

Temperament: The Sussex Spaniel can be good around children, but if overly pestered, this breed can snap. Somewhat of a lazy dog, they are protective of their home and will bark upon seeing a stranger. This breed should not be put in a home with unfamiliar smaller animals as they have a strong hunting instinct.

Care: The medium length coat of this breed should be brushed and/or combed regularly. The Sussex Spaniel is prone to ear infections and dirty ears so ear cleaning is of significant importance. Plucking dead hair is recommended and should be performed only by someone experienced.

Training: The Sussex Spaniel is used for hunting and sport purposes and does remarkably well. Training must be consistent however as this can be a rather lazy and uninterested breed. A quick learner, this dog also can be willful and independent so firm training is a must.

Activity: The Sussex Spaniel commonly battles weight problems so he should have sufficient exercise daily. Swimming and retrieving are sports this breed really enjoys. This dog does okay without a yard but loves a brisk run.
